US Careers Online raises awareness
of in-demand careers

January 9, 2019

US Careers Online is doing its part in helping raise awareness about careers in fields that are both vital to society and ones with opportunities for those who embark down their paths.

"If you see this video about this electrical contractor or the electric lineman and then you see the people in it that are in it every day that do that job, what it does psychologically, it says, 'You know, well I can do that ... you know, I can get that skill...' " said Jim Babson, who developed US Careers Online, which is based in Cary.

US Careers Online's mission, according to the website, "is to be a resource for middle and high school students and their parents, educators, and individuals re-entering the workforce to discover the many career opportunities available to them."

'Two of US Careers Online's videos relating to various careers like nursing recently crossed over into Vance-Granville Community College territory - the Mechatronics Engineering Technology video filmed in the summer last year and the Licensed Electrical Contractor filmed this March features VGCC people.

The licensed electrical contractor video, among other things, features two students who, in the video, are listed as electrical systems technology students with VGCC, for example.

There's a "high demand" nationwide as well as statewide in this state for the licensed electrical contractor, Babson said.

The ultimate goal with the two VGCC videos and the other videos US Careers Online has is all about career awareness, Babson said. 'That's really [the] two words .. .'' he added.

US Careers Online first identifies a particular industry that "really needs some attention" and after its found, its staff works with the community college where the skill is taught, and finally, they reach out to obtain a funding source to pay for the videos, he said."The community colleges are the core location places where the training is taught but here is a key point," he said in the email. "It is critical in bringing the attention in a visual way of what the training is about on the education perspective and we blend in workers in the videos that give you their story from a daily basis of what the job/career is all about. By doing this it gives the viewer a better understanding of the career.
